Magento is a multilingual platform. It helps you to reach more customers from different countries. Although localization does not require a change of codebase, several store owners get trouble with it.

As similar to translation extensions, you can translate any or all words and phrases in the Magento application using a language package.

A language pack contains translation files for different text content on your Magento 2 website. For instance, translation files for standard phrases and email templates, full translations for Community and Enterprise editions.

Typically a developer uses Magento language pack for one of the reasons:

  • Localization – exactly when you need to translate a phrase into a different language
  • Customization – when a phrase needs to be changed. For example, “Add to Compare -> Compare.”
  • Preparation for module localization – when you want to reach more merchants using your theme.

Magento 2 supports two types of language packages:

  • Translated Module and theme packages. Magento auto-discovers packages included in the directory of a module or theme. When installing themes and extensions, consider checking for multiple language versions to download and use.
  • An entire dictionary is in one directory. Use and distribute the dictionary as a standalone component (similar to modules and themes).
